Hypnotherapy in Caerphilly

Hypnotherapy is a combination of Psychotherapy and Hypnosis.

There are people who believe Hypnotherapy is something which is “done” to them after they have explained their issue to the therapist  and then the problem is hypnotised away.

Hypnotherapy using solution focused brief, cognitive behavioural and Neurolinguistic Programming therapeutic techniques combined with hypnosis is a powerful and effective way to create awareness and then make desired changes.  It is a collaborative process and depends on your full commitment and motivation to take the necessary steps to achieve your goals.

The purpose of the initial consultation is to assess what you want to achieve, find how hypnotherapy can help you and how many sessions you are likely to need.

Subsequent Hypnotherapy sessions involve much more than Hypnosis. During the first part of each session you will be encouraged to:

  •  express yourself positively,
  •  focus on positive achievements and noticeable changes over the course of the last week, and
  •  solutions rather than dwelling on problems,
  • imagine your preferred future where you have a more useful perspective on the quality of your life..

The second half of the session  I’ll then guide you into a relaxed state of Hypnosis where we can consolidate what we have discussed

What is Psychotherapy?

There are many different kinds of Psychotherapy and all are aimed at helping people overcome stress or emotional problems. Psychotherapy involves talking together to help overcome difficulties. Psychotherapy is often referred to as ‘talking therapy’.

What to expect

A variety of therapeutic techniques are used in the session including Solution Focused Brief Therapy; Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Neurolinguistic Programming.  All are designed to reduce anxiety, to calm and focus the mind. As the name suggests being solution focused directs our way of thinking by positively looking towards the future with clear perspective, rather than analysing problems of the past.

Provided you are willing to make some changes to the way you think, the therapy can be highly effective in relieving the symptoms of anxiety and stress. Focusing on solutions means we do not dwell on problems.

Instead we:

  • acknowledge where you are currently
  • identify where you want to be
  • help you to make the necessary changes

We do this without the need to analyse painful memories from the past. If you have experienced unpleasant events, we acknowledge they happened and help you get from where you are to where you want to be.

What is Hypnosis like?

Surprisingly, we all enter a trance like state in our every day lives. Have you ever driven a familiar journey and arrived remembering nothing about the journey? or become so engrossed in a book or surfing the net, you haven’t noticed the time going by?  If so, you’ve been in a state of focused attention, a bit like the feeling of being hypnotised.

During Hypnosis you will be guided into a similar state so that beneficial suggestion can be directed towards your subconscious.

What Hypnosis isn’t

Contrary to the image portrayed in films, books and the media, hypnosis does not involve the therapist taking control of your mind – no one can hypnotise you against your will.

Nobody can make you do anything you do not want to – your subconscious mind will reject any suggestion if it doesn’t fit with your values and beliefs.

Your concentration level is heightened during hypnosis. You cannot become “stuck” in a trance state – remember that when you are in a trance like state perhaps engrossed in a book or a TV programme, if someone rang the doorbell or telephone, your full awareness would return, even if you decided to ignore it. This applies to hypnosis too. You are in control – calm and relaxed – until you choose otherwise.

It is a myth that your personality changes, it won’t unless you want it to.

What Hypnosis is

Hypnosis is a state of focused attention where your mind is more responsive to suggestion. In a therapeutic setting, the suggestions are designed to be for your benefit according to your goals. For some, hypnosis can seem quite “ordinary”, rather like daydreaming where you are aware of everything being said whilst enjoying being in a deeply relaxed state.

Hypnotherapy in Caerphilly FAQs

How should I choose a hypnotherapist?
Hypnotherapy is unregulated so to ensure you are in safe hands select a registered member of an accredited organisation such as the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH). By doing this you can rest assured the hypnotherapist belongs to a body which has qualification requirements alongside their strict Code of Ethical Conduct. The HPD (Hypnotherapy in Practice Diploma) is a a highly respected course which is recognised within the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland (FHEQ).

Will I lose control?
No. When you are in hypnosis, you are in a deep state of relaxed concentration where if you choose, you can bring yourself around whenever you want to. We find ourselves in a trance state repeatedly throughout our normal daily lives. Where you are doing something you are familiar with you can often find yourself in ‘autopilot’ such as when you are driving a regular route or perhaps doing the ironing. If your attention was needed, it would be back in an instant and the same principle applies to hypnosis.
