We all know how pain can affect our lives
memories of brief experiences can easily be brought to mind. As small children when we fell or hurt ourselves we would often be told to “rub it better”. Just this simple act triggered a soothing form of distraction which could direct attention away from the pain.
There is more to this idea than just distraction, a toothache sufferer catching their arm over a steaming kettle will quickly find their attention has moved from the painful tooth.
Two studies from Harvard Medical School show hypnosis significantly reduces the time it takes to heal. In one study: six weeks after an ankle fracture, those in the hypnosis group showed the equivalent of eight and a half weeks of healing.
In a second study patients who had undergone breast reduction surgery and were assisted by hypnosis were found to have healed “significantly faster”.
Until the advent of chloroform in 1831, all manner of operations were performed on patients who were awake. If the patient was fortunate to have a surgeon who had studied “mesmerism” (as Hypnosis was then known) the experience was found to have been considerably less painful and chances of recovery were greater than without it.
Today there is an entire wing of the University Hospital of Liege in Belgium where surgery is performed using Hypnosis. There are substantial benefits to be gained by patients who use hypnosis including lower postoperative fatigue, shorter hospital stay, lower risk of infection, quicker return to normal activity and greater patient satisfaction.
How can Hypnotherapy help you with pain relief?
Lets not forget pain has a purpose and it must not be ignored entirely. However, chronic pain can be debilitating and lead to a reduction in activity. In certain conditions such as arthritis failure to remain mobile can accentuate the difficulties. If you feel pills are the extent to what can be done for you, you can be left feeling low and just worrying about the future can increase your anxiety.
Hypnosis can give you the ability to gain control over the switchboard that controls your pain sensations. You can learn specific skills which enable you to take control of which type of pain message you allow through to the brain.
Hypnotherapy is powerful and safe and can enable you to manage chronic pain such as arthritis. It enables you to switch off the unhelpful and habitual pain sensors whilst still allowing you to recognise any new or changed pain sensations so you can seek appropriate medical help.
NOTE: Hypnotherapy is a complementary therapy and useful for assisting clients manage and control pain. I will always work by co-operating with your GP. Clients often come to see me after their GP has suggested a complementary therapy.
